16 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: my father—may Allah have mercy on him—told me; from Hishām ibn Muḥammad; he said: ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Nafiʿ ibn Jaʿdah ibn Hubayrah related to me that when Ibn Muljam struck ʿAli—may Allah be pleased with him—while he was in prayer, ʿAli stepped back, placed his hands on the back of Jaʿdah ibn Hubayrah, and Jaʿdah led the people in the prayer. When the prayer ended, ʿAli said, “Bring the man to me.” He was brought, and ʿAli said, “O enemy of Allah, did I not treat you kindly and do this and that for you?” He replied, “Indeed.” ʿAli asked, “What drove you to act as you did?” He answered, “I sharpened my sword for forty days and then prayed to Allah to let me kill with it the worst of His creation.” ʿAli responded, “In my view you will be killed with that very sword, and I see that you are the worst of His creation.” Ibn Muljam was subsequently executed with that sword.
