On the night in which ʿAli—may Allah honor his face—was struck, Ibn al-Nabbah came to him at daybreak to notify him of the prayer while he was lying down, feeling heavy. He returned a second time to summon him to the prayer, but ʿAli gave no reply. When he came a third time, ʿAli rose and walked between al-Hasan and al-Husayn, reciting:
Gird yourself for death, for death will surely reach you;
Do not shrink from death when it descends upon your valley.
When he reached the Small Gate he said to them, “Stay where you are,” and he went inside. ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Muljam rushed at him and struck him. Umm Kulthum, the daughter of ʿAli, came out crying, “What have I to do with the dawn prayer? My husband, the Commander of the Believers, was killed at the dawn prayer, and my father was killed at the dawn prayer.”
