130 – Al-Ḥusayn related to us; ʿAbd Allāh related to us; Muhammad ibn Salām al-Jumaḥī related to us; he said: I heard ʿAbbād ibn Muslim narrate from Qatādah, who said: The three sons of Asmāʾ—the son of Jaʿfar, the son of Abū Bakr, and the son of ʿAlī—once competed in a foot-race. The two older boys, the son of Jaʿfar and the son of Abū Bakr, outpaced the others, while the son of ʿAlī came after them. Asmāʾ remarked, “Even if they have beaten you, their fathers never outstripped your father.” Qatādah then began to add his own comment, saying, “ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, was not their equal.” A man from Kūfah who was present said, “Uncle, give us only what you heard and spare us your opinion.”
• Muhammad the younger, a son of ʿAlī, died in infancy; his mother was a concubine.
