12 – Al-Ḥusayn related to us; ʿAbd Allāh related to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥakam related to us; ⦗28⦘ al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Shahr related to us; Khārijah transmitted, from Ḥuṣayn, from Hilāl ibn Yasāf, who said:
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib used to come out for the dawn prayer, calling, “The prayer, the prayer!” While he was doing so, two men leapt at him, and one of them struck him with a sword. Ibn al-Nabbāḥ raced back ahead of him, while the other attacker was seized. The people said, “We see nothing seriously wrong with him.” The assailant retorted, “I have steeped this sword in poison for two months; if I had shared it out among the Arabs, it would have wiped them out.” The women began to weep over ʿAlī, while others kept saying, “He will be fine.” Ibn Muljam—may Allah curse him—then said, “Is it for ʿAlī that you are weeping?”
