• Al-ʿAbbās al-Akbar ibn ʿAlī:
128 – Al-Ḥusayn related to us; ʿAbd Allāh related to us; al-Zubayr said: my uncle ⦗103⦘ reported that his descendants used to call him “the Water-Bearer” and give him the kunya Abū Qirbah (“Father of the Waterskin”). He stood with al-Ḥusayn, peace be upon him, at Karbalāʾ. When al-Ḥusayn became thirsty, al-ʿAbbās picked up a waterskin, and his maternal brothers—the sons of ʿAlī: ʿUthmān, Jaʿfar, and ʿAbd Allāh—went out behind him. Those brothers were slain before him, leaving no offspring. Al-ʿAbbās brought the waterskin back to al-Ḥusayn full; al-Ḥusayn drank from it, whereupon al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAlī was killed after his brothers while fighting beside al-Ḥusayn—may Allah’s blessings be upon them all. Al-ʿAbbās inherited his brothers, for they had left no children, and on his death his estate passed to his son ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās. At that time Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī (the son of al-Ḥanafiyyah) and ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī were both alive: Muḥammad ceded to ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās whatever share he had in their uncles’ estate, whereas ʿUmar refused until a settlement was reached and he received the portion that satisfied him. The mother of al-ʿAbbās and those brothers was Umm al-Banīn bint Ḥizām ibn Khālid ibn Rabīʿah ibn al-Waḥīd ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿĀmir ibn Kilāb ibn Rabīʿah.
• ʿUbayd Allāh and Abū Bakr, sons of ʿAlī, left no surviving progeny.
ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAlī had once joined al-Mukhtār, but he was killed fighting at the side of Muṣʿab ibn al-Zubayr. Muṣʿab had taken him under his wing because ʿUbayd Allāh found nothing to his liking with al-Mukhtār. The mother of ʿUbayd Allāh and Abū Bakr—the two sons of ʿAlī, peace be upon him—was Laylā bint Masʿūd ibn Khālid ibn Mālik ibn Ribʿī ibn Salmā ibn Jandal ibn Nahshal ibn Dārim. Their maternal brothers and sisters were Ṣāliḥ, Umm Abīhā, and Umm Muḥammad, children of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib. After ʿAlī’s death, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar married Laylā ⦗104⦘, thus having her and his own daughter as wives at the same time.
• Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlī left no descendants; he died young, before his father.
His mother was Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays al-Khathʿamiyyah. His maternal brothers were ʿAbd Allāh, Muḥammad, and ʿAwn—the sons of Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib—and Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq—may Allah be pleased with them all.
