127 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us. Al-Zubayr said—and Muḥammad ibn Salām also related to me—that I asked ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, “How did your forefather ʿAlī choose the name ʿUmar?”
He replied: I put the same question to my father, who reported from his father, from ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī himself, who said:
“I was born to my father after ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—had assumed the caliphate. My father went to him and said, ‘Commander of the Believers, a son was born to me last night.’ ʿUmar answered, ‘Give him to me.’ So my father said, ‘He is yours.’ ʿUmar then declared, ‘I have named him ʿUmar, and I have granted him my servant Mawraq.’ He now has many descendants living in Yanbuʿ.”
