116 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Harāsah transmitted from Muḥammad ibn Salamah al-Naṣībī, who said:
When ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may Allah be pleased with him, was killed, Umm al-Haytham bint al-ʿUryān recited:
O my eyes, stream with tears for years on end,
And let us weep the Commander of the Believers.
O best of those who ever mounted the swift mounts and bent them to their will,
And of those who boarded the ships and set to sea!
He enforced the prescribed limits without wavering,
And judged the obligatory ordinances with unclouded clarity.
Since the people lost ʿAlī,
They have been like startled ostriches roaming a desolate land.
So do not gloat, Muʿāwiyah son of Ḥarb,
For the rest of the caliphs are still among us.
We had enjoyed well-being before his slaying,
Beholding the Patron of the Messenger of Allah in our midst.
