106 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Jarīr, from Mughīra, said:

When the news of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib’s death reached Muʿāwiya while he was ⦗91⦘ taking his midday rest with his wife—the daughter of Quraza—on a scorching day, he exclaimed, “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return! How much knowledge, goodness, virtue, and understanding have they now lost!”

His wife retorted, “Only yesterday you were attacking him to his very face, and today you recite the istirjāʿ for him?”

He replied, “Woe to you! You have no idea what we have lost of his knowledge, his excellence, and his earlier achievements.”
