99 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Yūnus ibn Bukayr related to me; he said: my father told me; he said: Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Juʿfī narrated from Jābir al-Juʿfī, from ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī, who said ⦗85⦘:
On the morning ʿAlī passed away, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī led the dawn prayer. When he had finished he said:
“All praise is due to Allah—abundant praise—for what we love and for what we dislike. Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we return. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
O people! I seek my reward with Allah for the calamity that has befallen me in losing the best of fathers, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And know, O assembly, that in this very night a man has departed such that none before him surpassed him and none after him will ever equal him: ʿAlī, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his brother.
We therefore seek recompense with Allah for what has afflicted us—the People of the House in particular—and for what has afflicted the entire community of Muhammad in general. By Allah, I will speak nothing today but the truth: his death has stricken every servant, every land, every tree, and every beast.
So we ask the All-Kind, the All-Merciful, to show mercy to his noble face, to punish his murderer, and to grant us a righteous successor after him.”
