Should the mortgagee overstep the limits in his handling of the pledge, he is liable for its full value as though he had usurped it.

If the mortgagee lends the pledge to the pledger and the latter takes possession of it, the mortgagee’s liability ceases; if it then perishes in the pledger’s hand, it perishes without compensation. The mortgagee may nevertheless reclaim it, and once he does so, liability returns to him.
