A salam sale may be concluded for cloth so long as the length, width, and the size of each piece are precisely specified. It is not permissible for gemstones or beads. There is no objection to a salam in unfired mud-bricks or baked bricks, provided a known mould size is named.
Every commodity whose qualities can be firmly described and whose quantity can be clearly determined may be sold on salam; whatever cannot be so described or measured may not.
It is lawful to sell a dog, a cheetah, and other beasts of prey, but it is unlawful to sell wine or swine. Silkworms may not be sold unless they are sold together with the silk they have produced, nor bees except together with their hives.
The People of the Covenant (ahl al-dhimma) are treated like Muslims in matters of sale, save only with regard to wine and swine: their contract for wine is treated like a Muslim’s contract for grape must, and their contract for swine like a Muslim’s contract for sheep.
