Chapter: The Eclipse Prayer

When the sun is eclipsed, the imam leads the people in two rakʿahs (units of prayer) performed like a voluntary prayer, with one rukūʿ (bowing) in each rakʿah. In both rakʿahs he lengthens the recitation and, according to Abū Ḥanīfah, recites quietly. Abū Yūsuf and Muḥammad maintain that he should recite aloud, after which he continues to supplicate until the sun becomes clear.

The imam who usually leads the Friday prayer should also lead the eclipse prayer; if no congregational Friday prayer is held, the people perform it individually.

There is no congregational prayer for a lunar eclipse; each person prays on his own, and there is no sermon for an eclipse prayer.
