Third angle
Thirdly, the servant should call to mind the excellent reward Allah has promised to those who pardon and remain patient, as He Most High says: “The requital of an evil deed is an evil deed like it; but whoever pardons and puts things right, his reward is with Allah. Surely He does not love the wrongdoers.” 1
When people are faced with injury, they fall into three categories:
- the wrongdoer, who takes more than his due;
- the moderate, who takes exactly what is his right; and
- the beneficent, who forgives and relinquishes his right altogether.
All three categories are mentioned in this verse: the beginning speaks of the moderates, the middle of the forerunners in virtue, and the end of the wrongdoers.
He should also remember the herald’s call on the Day of Resurrection: “Let those whose reward is assured by Allah rise!” 2 No one will stand except those who forgave and made amends. 3 If, along with this, he realizes that by seeking retaliation and full recompense he forfeits that reward, patience and pardon will become easy for him.
