Qa'ida fi al-SabrIbn Taimiya

had empowered them against him1, instead of reviling, blaming, or maligning them. If you see a servant lashing out at people when they hurt him, yet he does not hold himself to account and seek forgiveness, know that his ordeal is a genuine calamity. But if he repents, asks for pardon, and says, “This is because of my sins,” then for him the affliction turns into a blessing.

‘Ali ibn Abi Talib—may Allah be pleased with him—2 said, in one of his priceless sayings: “Let no servant place his hope in anyone but his Lord, and let no servant fear anything except his own sin.”3 It is also related from him and from others: “No trial descends except because of a sin, and it is not removed except through repentance.”45

(1) The manuscript reads as it stands; the more plausible wording is “al-lati sallataha ʿalayhi” (those which He empowered against him). (2) Copy B adds the honorific “karrama Allahu wajhahu” (may Allah honour his face). (3) Reported by al-Bayhaqi, Shuʿab al-iman, 7/122, no. 9718; by al-Asbahani, al-Targhib wa-l-tarhib, 2/662, no. 1586; and by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, Jamiʿ bayan al-ʿilm wa-fadlihi, 1/383, nos. 547–548. (4) Al-Zubayr b. Bakkar relates in al-Ansab (as cited by Ibn Hajar, Fath al-bari, 2/497; the passage is absent from the printed portion) that when ʿUmar sought rain through al-ʿAbbas, the latter prayed: “O Allah, no affliction descends except because of a sin, and none is removed except through repentance,” within a longer supplication. The same wording is transmitted by Abu Bakr Ahmad b. Marwan al-Dinawari (d. 333 AH) in al-Mujalasa wa-jawahir al-ʿilm, 3/102–103 (Dar Ibn Hazm), as a mawquf report from al-ʿAbbas during ʿUmar’s istisqaʾ. Ibn ʿAsakir also records it in Tarikh Dimashq, 26/358–359 (Dar al-Fikr, p. 184, entry “ʿUbada b. Awfa – ʿAbd Allah b. Thawb”) through Abu Salih Bazam, the client of Ibn Haniʾ, from al-ʿAbbas, in a lengthy narration. By contrast, Sahih al-Bukhari mentions only that ʿUmar performed istisqaʾ through the supplication of al-ʿAbbas (2/494 with Fath al-bari), Book of Istisqaʾ, “Chapter: The people ask the imam to pray for rain when they suffer drought,” no. 1010, without quoting the wording; the above phrase is not included there.
