are signs for every patient, grateful person.”¹ And if a servant were to contemplate the religion in its entirety, he would find that it all boils down to patience and gratitude. Patience, in turn, is of three kinds:
- Patience in fulfilling acts of obedience until one actually performs them, for a servant will seldom carry out a divine command except after
(1) Quran 14:5 (Surah Ibrahim), 31:31 (Surah Luqman), 34:19 (Surah Saba), and 42:33 (Surah al-Shura).
لآياتٍ لِكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُورٍ﴾ ١ وإذا اعتبر العبد الدين كله رآه يرجع بجملته إلى الصبر والشكر، وذلك لأن الصبر ثلاثة أقسام:
صبر على الطاعة حتى يفعلها، فإن العبد لا يكاد يفعل المأمور به إلا بعد
