Qa'ida fi al-SabrIbn Taimiya

—for he said: “How wonderful is the believer’s affair! His entire affair is astonishing; Allah never decrees¹ anything for a believer except that it is good for him. If ease comes to him, he gives thanks and that is better for him, and if hardship strikes him, he is patient and that is better for him.”²

This ḥadith therefore embraces every decree that Allah passes on His believing servant, affirming that all of it is good for him, provided he remains patient when faced with what he dislikes and grateful for what he loves. Indeed, this is included in the very definition of faith,³ as some of the early scholars said: “Faith is two halves: one half patience and one half gratitude.”⁴ For the Almighty says, “Indeed, in that…”

(1) In manuscript B the reading is: "ma". (2) Reported by Muslim, Book of Zuhd, chapter “The believer’s affair is all good” (8/227); by Imam Ahmad in the Musnad (1/173); and by al-Darimi in his Sunan, Book of Heart-Softeners, chapter “The believer is rewarded for everything” (2/318), with the wording: “How wonderful is the affair of the believer; indeed, his whole affair is good …”. I have not found the variant “… all of it is astonishing” that the author cites. (3) In manuscript B: “for he, as he said …”. (4) Related by Wakiʿ ibn al-Jarrah in al-Zuhd (2/456, no. 203), al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (9/107) and al-Munziri in al-Targhib wa-l-Tarhib (4/171, no. 4976) as a statement of Ibn Masʿud: “Patience is half of faith, and certitude is the whole of faith.” Al-Bukhari cites only the second half without isnad in his Sahih (1/45), Book of Faith, chapter “Islam is built upon five”: “Certitude is the whole of faith.” The saying is also transmitted—with slight variations—by al-Kharaiti, Fadl al-Shukr (p. 39, no. 18); Ibn al-Aʿrabi, al-Muʿjam (1/309); Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ (5/34); Tamam, al-Fawaʾid (2/40); Abu l-Hasan al-Azdi, al-Majalis (1st session, pp. 16-17); al-Qudaʿi, Musnad al-Shihab (1/126-127); al-Bayhaqi, Shuʿab al-Iman (7/123, no. 9715); al-Asbahani, al-Targhib wa-l-Tarhib (2/661, no. 1582); al-Khateeb, Tarikh Baghdad (13/226); Ibn al-Jawzi, al-ʿIlal al-Mutanahiyah (2/330-331); and al-Dhahabi, Mukhtasar al-ʿIlal (3/1125) as a prophetic hadith. Ibn Abi l-Dunya records in al-Shukr (no. 14): “Gratitude is half of faith, patience is half of faith, and certitude is the whole of faith.” Al-Bayhaqi, in al-Zuhd (1/28), preserves the companion-level wording—“Faith is two halves: half is patience and half is gratitude”—and remarks that the elevated (marfuʿ) version comes only through a weak chain; he repeats this judgment in Shuʿab al-Iman. Al-Haythami, Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (1/57), says of Tabarani’s chain: “Its transmitters are those used by al-Bukhari and Muslim.” Al-Suyuti lists it in al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir (with Fayd al-Qadir 4/233) and marks it weak; al-Manawi attributes the weakness to Yaʿqub b. Humayd’s poor memory. Ibn Hajar comments in Fath al-Bari (1/48): “This quotation forms part of a report that al-Tabarani transmits with a sound chain; the remainder reads: ‘and patience is half of faith.’ Abu Nuʿaym and al-Bayhaqi narrate it marfuʿ from Ibn Masʿud in their works on zuhd, but the marfuʿ isnad is not sound.” In Lisan al-Mizan (5/152) he cites Abu ʿAli al-Naysaburi: “This hadith is munkar; it has no basis through Zubayd or al-Thawri.” Only al-ʿIraqi deemed it acceptable in his Takhrij of the Ihya (1/72, 1/231). Al-Albani, Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Daʿifa (1/506-507, no. 499), labels it “munkar.” In sum, the report is authentic when stopped at Ibn Masʿud (mawquf) but weak when raised to the Prophet (marfuʿ). Ibn Taymiyya’s phrasing—“Some of the early scholars said”—accordingly supports the mawquf status.
