but rather despise the Arabs, being utterly devoid of knowledge (1).

= They hold that anyone who commits grave sins is a polytheist; however, the Sufriyya do not permit killing the children or women of their opponents. See: al-Milal wa-l-nihal, 1:134; al-Farq bayna al-firaq, 97. (1) Not found in MS (T). (2) One of the principal Kharijite branches. Ibn Hazm lists it under the Sufriyya. Its followers are traced back to Abu Bayhas of the Banu Saʿd b. Dabiʿa. Among their main doctrines: no one is deemed a Muslim until he affirms knowledge of God, His messengers, and what the Prophet brought; a person who commits a sin is not declared an unbeliever until he is brought before the ruler and punished; before that, he is called neither believer nor unbeliever. Some of them add: when the ruler becomes an unbeliever, his subjects become unbelievers as well. See: al-Milal wa-l-nihal, 1:124; al-Farq bayna al-firaq, 87-88; al-Fasl fi-l-milal, 5:54; Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, 74-75. (3) Named after Maymun b. Khalid al-Balkhi. They agree with the Muʿtazila on predestination. Among their most reprehensible innovations: allowing marriage to one’s grand-daughters and to the grand-daughters of one’s brothers and sisters, and denying that Surat Yusuf belongs to the Quran. See: al-Milal wa-l-nihal, 1:128; al-Farq bayna al-firaq, 264. (4) The Khazimiyya (or Hazimiyya): followers of Hazim b. Ali. They diverged from the Kharijites on the doctrine of final destiny. They say that God takes charge of His servants according to what He knows they will end upon at the close of their lives—faith or unbelief—and that He has always loved His allies and hated His enemies. See: al-Milal wa-l-nihal, 1:127; al-Farq bayna al-firaq, 73; Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, 65. (5) MS (T): “and the Muhlabiyya, the Harithiyya, and the Khurmiyya.”
