they have no share in Islam whatsoever; rather, they are the renegades (1)(2).
Among the names given to the Khārijites are:
- al-Haruriyya (3): they are the people of Harurāʾ (4)(5).
(1) Absent from the T copy.
(2) Their designation as al-mariqa (the renegades) appears in the well-known hadith recorded by al-Bukhari, Sahih, Book of Merits, chapter “Signs of Prophethood in Islam,” no. 3611, and by Muslim, Sahih, Book of Zakat, chapter “Encouragement to kill the khawarij,” no. 1066. ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘Toward the end of time a people will emerge, youthful in age and shallow in understanding. They will quote the best speech of human beings, yet they will bolt from Islam as an arrow passes cleanly through its target; faith will not go beyond their throats. Wherever you meet them, kill them, for killing them earns a reward on the Day of Resurrection.’”
Abu al-Hasan al-Malti explains the phrase “they bolt from the religion as the arrow passes through the prey” in his work Al-Tanbih wa-l-radd ʿala ahl al-ahwaʾ wa-l-bidaʿ (pp. 65–66): “It means they leave the religion while you—by the consensus of the umma—remain within it. They are unanimously regarded as having departed from Allah’s religion. Their deeds—spilling Muslim blood, declaring both the early and later generations to be unbelievers, and deeming lawful what Allah has forbidden—are manifest proof that they are outside the religion and steeped in rebellion and sin. Some of their factions even reach outright unbelief by their actions and claims.”
(3) They were called Haruriyya because they assembled in a place named Harura, near Kufa, where the first group broke away from ʿAli’s army. See: Al-Ashʿari, Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, p. 83; al-Baghdadi, Al-Farq bayna al-firaq, p. 57.
(4) In T: “the people of Harura.”
(5) Yaqut writes in Muʿjam al-buldan 2/245: “Harura—pronounced with two fathas, a silent waw, and a second ra …”
