and with heinous offences, and they purposely depart from the ordinances of the religion and the sunnahs of Islam (1). They do not believe in the torment of the grave, the Prophet’s Pool, or intercession, and they insist that no one at all will ever be released from Hell (2). They even maintain (3): “Whoever utters a single lie, or commits any sin—minor or major—and then dies without repenting is an unbeliever (4); such a person belongs in the Fire, to remain there forever and ever (5).” They also side with the Bakriyyah regarding the ḥabbah and the qīrāṭ. In doctrine they are Qadariyyah (6), Jahmiyyah (7), and Murjiʾah (8)

(6) This is the view of the Maimuniyya subgroup. Al-Ashari sums up their doctrine: “Their distinctive claim concerns qadar (divine decree) along Mu‘tazili lines: they hold that Allah has delegated human actions to the servants, giving them full ability with respect to everything they are charged with; they can therefore choose either disbelief or faith. Consequently, none of their deeds occurs by Allah’s will, and human acts are not created by Him.” Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, pp. 63-64. (7) Cited because most of them affirm that the Quran is created; see Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, p. 72. (8) This is the position of the Baihasiyya subgroup. Al-Shahrastani reports: “Iman (faith), according to them, is to know every truth and falsehood; faith is therefore knowledge of the heart without reference to speech or action. It is related of their founder that he said: ‘Iman is acknowledgment and knowledge, and cannot be one without the other.’ The majority of the Baihasiyya maintain that knowledge, acknowledgment, and action together constitute iman.” Al-Milal wa-l-Nihal, 1:124; see also Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, pp. 74-75.
