Ijma' as-Salaf fi al-I'tiqadAl-Kirmani

• al-Bakriyyah (1)(2): They are a Qadari sect, nicknamed “the people of the ḥabbah and the qīrāṭ” (3) — and of the dāniq (4)(5). (6) They contend that whoever takes even a single ḥabbah, a qīrāṭ, or a dāniq becomes an unbeliever; their stance mirrors that of the Khārijites.

• al-Jahmiyyah (7): enemies of Allah; they claim that the Quran is created,

(1) In MS (T) the reading is “al-Nusayriyya” instead of “al-Bakriyya.” (2) The group was called Bakriyya after Bakr, the nephew of Abd al-Wahid ibn Zayd. They maintain that the human being is the soul alone, not the body; that on the Day of Resurrection Allah will be seen in a form He specially creates and will speak to His servants from within it; and that children and animals feel no pain. These assertions run counter to what reason necessarily knows. See Abu al-Hasan al-Ashari, Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, p. 168; al-Baghdadi, al-Farq bayn al-Firaq, p. 200; al-Shahrastani, Iʿtiqadat Firaq al-Muslimin waʾl-Mushrikin, p. 69. (3) A qirat is a fraction of a dinar, amounting in most regions to one-twentieth of it. See Ibn al-Athir, al-Nihaya, 4:64. (4) A daniq equals one-sixth of either a dinar or a dirham. See Lisan al-Arab, 10:105. (5) Absent from MS (T). (6) Supplied from MS (T). (7) The Jahmiyya are the followers of Jahm ibn Safwan, whose teachings appeared in Tirmidh; he was executed by Salm ibn Ahwaz al-Mazani in Marw near the end of Umayyad rule. With the Muʿtazila they deny the eternal divine attributes, the beatific vision, and affirm that the Quran is created. Going further, they argue that any attribute shared with creatures entails anthropomorphism, so they deny that Allah can be described as living or knowing, while conceding only that He is omnipotent, acting, and creating. They also hold that humans are compelled in their acts, that Paradise and Hell will perish, that faith (iman) is merely knowledge of Allah, and that faith therefore admits no degrees. See al-Shahrastani, al-Milal waʾl-Nihal, 1:85; Abu al-Hasan al-Ashari, Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, p. 164.
