Such a remark is one of the vilest utterances of the innovators and the closest of them to misguidance and ruin; indeed, it is outright error. He claims that he rejects taqlīd, yet he has actually entrusted his religion to Abū Ḥanīfah (1), Bishr al-Marīsī (2), and their followers. Who, then, could be a greater enemy of Allah’s religion than someone who wishes to extinguish the Sunan, abolish the transmitted reports and narrations, while asserting that he does not practice taqlīd even though he has blindly followed the very people I have just named for you—leaders of misguidance, heads of innovation, and commanders of the dissenters (3)? [Upon the one who makes this claim be the wrath of Allah] (4) (5).
(1) Al-Nuʿman b. Thabit al-Kufi, known as Abu Hanifa the Imam. It is said that his family was of Persian origin and also said that he was a client (mawla) of Banu Taym. A celebrated jurist of the sixth generation of narrators, he met Anas b. Malik and heard hadith from ʿAtaʾ, Nafiʿ, and ʿIkrima. He died in 150 AH, the soundest view, at the age of seventy. See: al-Taqrib, p. 494; al-Kashif, 2/322; Tarikh Baghdad, 13/324.
(2) Bishr b. Ghiyath al-Marisi was an innovator and deviant; narrating from him is impermissible. A pupil of Abu Yusuf, he excelled in jurisprudence and mastered kalam (dialectical theology), then openly declared that the Quran was created. Although he never met Jahm b. Safwan, he adopted Jahm’s doctrine, argued for it, and actively propagated it. He died in 218 AH. See: Lisan al-Mizan, 2/30; for further details, Tarikh Baghdad, 7/56–66.
(3) It is not acceptable to label Abu Hanifa—may Allah have mercy upon him—as one of the “Imams of misguidance” or the “leaders of innovation.” He was a mujtahid imam whose creed agrees with that of Ahl al-Sunnah in most matters. Any slips attributed to him were the result of ijtihad or lack of access to evidence; he never intended to harm the religion, unlike the misguided innovator Bishr al-Marisi. The absence of this pejorative remark in the works of Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Abi Yaʿla indicates that they did not endorse it.
