—are genuine and true. Dreams experienced by the prophets (1) were revelation (2); so who could be more ignorant (3) than the one who maligns dreams (4) and claims they amount to nothing? I have even been informed that whoever makes such a claim does not deem ritual bathing after a nocturnal emission obligatory (5).
It has been narrated from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that: “A believer’s dream is a word (6) with which the Lord speaks to His servant” (7). He also said, “Dreams are from Allah” (8) (9).
Success comes only through Allah.
(1) In MS T: “from the prophets, peace be upon them,” and in MS H: “from the prophets.”
(2) In MS T: “revelation.”
(3) In MSS T and H: “so which ignoramus is more ignorant.”
(4) He is referring to the view of the Nazzamiyya, a Mu‘tazilite group that followed Ibrahim b. Sayyar an-Nazzam; they claim that dreams are nothing but passing thoughts. See al-Ash‘ari, Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, p. 240.
(5) As in MSS T and H.
(6) From MS H only.
(7) Reported by Ibn Abi ‘Asim in Al-Sunnah, no. 486, through Junayd b. Maymun Abu ‘Abd al-Hamid → Hamzah b. al-Zubayr → ‘Ubadah b. al-Samit, marfu‘: “The believer’s dream is speech by which his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, addresses him in sleep.” The chain contains Junayd b. Maymun and Hamzah b. al-Zubayr, both unknown. Al-Haythami said in Majma‘ al-Zawaid 7/362: “Related by al-Tabarani; its chain includes narrators I do not know.” See Fath al-Bari 12/354. Al-Albani graded it weak in Zilal al-Jannah and in Da‘if al-Jami‘, no. 3078.
(8) In MS T: “Dreams are from Allah, Mighty and Majestic”; in MS H: “Dreams are from Allah.”
(9) Reported by al-Bukhari, Book of Medicine, chapter: Blowing during ruqya, no. 5747, and by Muslim, Book of Dreams, no. 2261. Complete wording: “The good dream is from Allah and the nightmare is from Satan. If any of you sees something he dislikes, let him blow to his left three times upon waking and seek refuge from its evil; it will not harm him.”
