Ijma' as-Salaf fi al-I'tiqadAl-Kirmani

never ignorant; generous, never miserly; forbearing, never hasty; the Preserver who never forgets; ever-alert(1), never prone to oversight; the Watchful(2), never inattentive. He speaks and moves(3)(4), hears and sees(5), and beholds; He withholds(6) and extends; He laughs(7), rejoices and loves, and He dislikes and detests,

(1) Not found in ms. H. I add: The name “Yaqzan” (Ever-Awake) is not authentically established for Allah; therefore it may not be applied to Him. The divine names are tawqifi—restricted to what Allah has named Himself or what His Messenger has named Him. One should rather say: “la takhudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm” (“Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him”). (2) In mss. T and H the reading is: qarib (near). (3) Ms. T adds: “yataharrak, wa yatakallam” (moves and speaks), whereas H omits “yataharrak”. (4) Allah has described Himself as Living, and every living being necessarily has movement. He has also described Himself with descending, coming and arriving, all of which indicate that He moves in a manner befitting His majesty, the modality of which is beyond our comprehension. Yet the word “haraka” (movement) itself does not appear in the Quran or Sunnah, and the early scholars only employed it when refuting the negators such as the Jahmiyya. See: Darimi, Naqd al-Marisi 1/215; Ibn Taymiyya, Majmu‘ al-Fatawa 8/21; Ibn al-Qayyim, Mukhtasar al-Sawā‘iq 3/1230. The basic rule is to adhere to the wording of the revealed texts. Shaykh al-Islam wrote: “The soundest approach in this field is to keep to the expressions of the texts: affirm whatever Allah and His Messenger have affirmed, in the very terms they used, and deny whatever they denied—thus we affirm descent, coming and arriving, and we negate likeness, equal, counterpart or rival.” Majmu‘ al-Fatawa 16/423-424; see also Mukhtasar al-Sawā‘iq 4/1230-1232.
