Ijma' as-Salaf fi al-I'tiqadAl-Kirmani
  • Munkar and Nakir are real; they are the examiners of the graves (1)(2). We ask Allah for steadfastness.
  • The Basin of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—is real, a basin (3) to which his community will come (4). It has vessels from which they will drink (5).
  • The Bridge is real; it will be laid across the middle of Hell (6), and people will cross over it (7), while Paradise lies beyond. [We ask Allah for safety and safe passage (8)] (9).
— “…Allah will grant him a seat in Paradise; the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘…and he will see them both together….’” The hadith is reported by al-Bukhari in his Sahih, Book of Funerals, chapter “The deceased hears the sound of sandals,” no. 1338. (1) In the T and H copies: “the grave.” (2) Its proof is the Prophet’s statement: “When the dead man—or one of you—is laid in the grave, two angels, dark and blue, called al-Munkar and al-Nakir, come to him and ask, ‘What did you use to say about this man? …’” Related by al-Tirmidhi (1071) with a sound chain; see al-Silsila al-Sahiha (1391). (3) From H. (4) In T: tarudduhu; in H: tarudduhu ummatuhu (“his community will turn him back”). (5) As the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “My basin spans a month’s journey; its water is whiter than milk, its scent finer than musk, and its goblets are like the stars in the sky. Whoever drinks from it will never be thirsty again.” Reported by al-Bukhari, Book of Softening the Hearts, chapter on the Basin, no. 6579, and by Muslim, Book of Virtues, chapter on affirming the Prophet’s Basin, no. 2292. (6) From T and H; in Q the reading is fi (“in”). (7) In H: “and the people will pass.” (8) Omitted in T. (9) Omitted in H.
