another person’s provision (1); yet such a claim echoes the doctrine of the Magians (2) and the Christians (3). In reality, he merely ate his own apportioned provision, and Allah had decreed (4) that he would consume it in precisely the way he did.
- And whoever asserts that the taking of a life is not governed by the decree of Allah, the Almighty (5), and that this (6) does not occur by His will within His creation (7), is effectively claiming that the slain person died before his appointed term (8). What disbelief in Allah could be clearer than that? (9)
(1) In manuscripts T and H the reading is: “rizq ghayrihi” (the provision of someone else).
(2) In manuscripts T and H: “This is the plain statement of the Majus (Zoroastrians),” with no mention of the Christians.
(3) Al-Bayhaqi explains that the Qadariyya affirmed decree (qadar) for themselves while denying it for God, refused to ascribe the creation of their acts to Him and claimed it for themselves. By attributing some created things to God and others to themselves they resemble the Majus, who posit two principles—light and darkness—and hold that good proceeds from light and evil from darkness (al-Iʿtiqad, p. 275; see also al-Khattabi, Maʿalim al-Sunan, 4/317; al-Nawawi, Sharh Muslim, 1/110). Their resemblance to the Christians stems from their assertion that the servant creates his own act, thereby postulating alongside God another creator, just as the Christians believe in a plurality of deities.
(4) In T the word “lahu” is absent; H reads instead: “Rather, he ate the provision God had decreed for him to eat.”
(5) From manuscripts T and H.
(6) An addition required by the context.
(7) From manuscript T.
(8) This is the position of many Muʿtazilites, who claim that a murdered person dies before the term originally fixed for him and that, had he not been killed, he would have remained alive. For a refutation, see Majmuʿ al-Fatawa, 8/516-518.
(9) In manuscripts T and H: “And what kufr (more evident disbelief) could there be than this?”
