Ijma' as-Salaf fi al-I'tiqadAl-Kirmani
  • Whoever claims that faith is nothing more than verbal assertion while deeds are merely secondary ordinances is a Murjiʾī.
  • [And whoever alleges that faith neither increases nor decreases is a Murjiʾī] ⦗1⦘.
  • And if he says ⦗2⦘, “Faith increases but does not decrease,” ⦗3⦘ he has adopted the doctrine of the Murjiʾah.
(1) Not found in the T and H manuscripts. (2) The T and H manuscripts read: “and whoever claims…”. (3) The assertion that *iman* (faith) can increase while never decreasing is famously attributed to the Ghassaniyya, followers of Ghassan the Murjiʾite; several heresiographers record this attribution. See: al-Asfarayini, Al-Tabsir fi l-din, p. 98; al-Baghdadi, Al-Fark bayna l-firaq, p. 191. Some writers instead ascribe the view to al-Husayn b. Muhammad al-Najjar; see: al-Ashʿari, Maqalat al-Islamiyyin, p. 88. Al-Zabidi was mistaken when he cited, on the authority of Ghassan and others, a statement of Abu Hanifa—may Allah have mercy on him—“*iman* increases and does not decrease,” and then added: “What Ghassan and others transmit from him is exactly Malik’s view” (Ithaf al-sada al-muttaqin, 2/256). This is clearly erroneous. The reports from Imam Malik—may Allah have mercy on him—only show that he suspended judgment on whether *iman* decreases; he never categorically denied the possibility of decrease. Suspension of judgment is not the same as affirming that decrease is impossible. Definitive proof comes from authentic reports in which Imam Malik explicitly states that *iman* both increases and decreases, thereby abandoning his earlier hesitation. ʿAbd Allah b. Ahmad relates in Al-Sunnah (1/342), al-Ajurri in Al-Shariʿah (2/606), and al-Lalikai in Sharh al-iʿtiqad (5/1028)—all through chains that go back to Salamah b. Shabib from ʿAbd al-Razzaq al-Sanʿani—who said: “I heard Maʿmar, Sufyan al-Thawri, Malik b. Anas, Ibn Jurayj, and Sufyan b. ʿUyaynah say: *iman* is speech and action; it increases and decreases.” The chain of transmission is sound.
