Manhaj al-Salikin wa Tawdih al-Fiqh fi al-DinAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

and no man should lead another in prayer where the latter has authority, nor sit in his place of honor in his house without his permission.” Reported by Muslim1.

147—The following should be observed:

  1. The imam should stand in front.
  2. The worshippers behind him should stand closely together.
  3. They should complete2 each row in sequence, beginning with the first.

148—Anyone who prays one full unit of prayer3 alone behind the row without an excuse must repeat his prayer.

149—Ibn Abbās said: “One night, I prayed with the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and stood to his left. He took hold of my head from behind and moved me to his right.” Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim4.

= is valid for himself, it is also valid for those who pray behind him. This was the practice of the earliest generations. Indeed, some leading scholars, including Shaykh al-Islām and others, held that avoiding sinful imams and praying alone originated in the way of religious innovators and the Rāfida. Such a view may lead people to abandon congregational prayer. The indisputable truth is that prayer, like jihad, is undertaken behind every leader, whether righteous or sinful. The shaykh discussed this issue at length; see *al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 42. (1) Muslim (no. 673). (2) Manuscript “T” reads: “and they should complete the row.” (3) Manuscripts “B” and “T” read: “one unit of prayer while standing alone.” (4) Recorded by al-Bukhārī (3/192; 11/116) and Muslim (no. 763). The shaykh affirmed that =
