[TIMES OF PROHIBITION]
139—The times during which unrestricted voluntary prayers1 are prohibited are:
1—from the Fajr prayer until the sun has risen the height of a spear2;
2—from the Asr prayer until sunset; and
3—from when the sun stands at the zenith until it begins to decline.
And Allah knows best.
1. The shaykh preferred the view that prayers performed for a specific reason are not prohibited at these times, such as the prayer of greeting the mosque. The same applies when someone has already prayed and then enters a mosque during a prohibited time while the congregation is praying. Hence, the author specifies here “unrestricted voluntary prayers.” *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 37.
2. The shaykh preferred the view that the prohibition begins after performing the Fajr prayer, not at the break of dawn, as explicitly stated in the hadith recorded by Muslim. The same applies to the Asr prayer: the prohibition begins after it has been performed, not when its time begins. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 37.
