Manhaj al-Salikin wa Tawdih al-Fiqh fi al-DinAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

3—and by laughing aloud;

4—and by continuous, excessive movement—as customarily understood—without necessity(1). This is because, in the first case, one omitted something without which the act of worship cannot be complete, while in the latter cases, one did something prohibited during it.

124—The following are disliked:

1—turning aside during prayer. This is because(2) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about turning aside during prayer, and he replied: “It is something Satan snatches from a servant’s prayer.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī(3).

2—Fidgeting;

3—placing one’s hand on one’s hip;

4—interlacing one’s fingers;

5—and cracking them,

(1) Such movement is forbidden. A small amount of movement without need is disliked; a small amount for a need and extensive movement in cases of necessity are permissible. Movement that is prescribed includes moving forward or backward to form rows during the fear prayer, and moving to straighten a row, as the Shaykh explains in *Al-Qawāid wa-al-Furūq*, p. 138. (2) A reads: “just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about turning aside.” (3) Reported by al-Bukhārī, 2:234.
