3—He then supplicates Allah for whatever he wishes.
109—Then he gives the salām to his right and to his left, saying, “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah” (based on the hadith of Wā’il ibn Hujr, narrated by Abū Dāwūd) 3, 4.

1. Narrated by al-Bukhārī, 6/408, and Muslim, no. 406.
2. Narrated by Muslim, no. 588, from Abū Hurayra, and no. 590, from Ibn Abbās.
3. An addition from T.
4. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd, no. 997. Abd al-Qādir al-Arnā’ūt stated in *Jāmi al-Usūl*, no. 3566: “Its chain of transmission is disconnected, since Alqama ibn Wā’il did not hear from his father. However, the hadith has corroborating reports conveying the same meaning, by which it is strengthened.”
5. The shaykh held that the correct view is that whenever a follower can hear the imam’s recitation, he is not required to recite, nor is recitation prescribed for him. If he cannot hear it, however, he must recite al-Fātiha, whether the prayer is recited silently or aloud. He said: “This is the most balanced view on this issue, and it reconciles all the evidence.” *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 38.
