so her entire body1 is awrah during prayer except for her face.

2—The less stringent category: this is the awrah of a boy aged seven to ten, and it2 consists of the two private parts.

3—The intermediate category: this is the awrah of everyone else, extending from the navel to the knee3.

Allah Most High says: “O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship.” [al-Aʿrāf: 31]

65—Another of its conditions is facing the qiblah.

Allah Most High says: “And from wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque.” [al-Baqarah: 149, 150]

66—If one is unable to face it because of illness or otherwise, that requirement is waived, just as

(1) In “B” and “T”: “then indeed her entire [body].” (2) In “B”: *fa-innahu* (“then it [masculine] is”); and in “T”: *fa-innahā* (“then it [feminine] is”). (3) The Shaykh stated in *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 29: The correct view is that a man’s covering of both shoulders, or one of them, during prayer serves to complete and perfect the prayer but is not a condition of its validity. The hadith of Abū Hurayra, “A man must not pray in a single garment with none of it over his shoulder,” is explained by the hadith of Jābir: “If the garment is ample, wrap yourself in it; if it is narrow, wrap it around your waist, or cross its ends.” This is also because the shoulder is not *awrah*; covering it during prayer therefore serves to perfect the prayer. This is the view of the majority of scholars.
