2—Then he says, “In the name of Allah.”

3—Then he strikes the soil once with both hands,1

4—He wipes his entire face and both hands with them.

45—There is no harm if he strikes it twice.

Allah Most High says:

“But if you find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to impose hardship upon you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you, so that you may be grateful.” [al-Mā’idah: 6].

Jābir reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have been granted five things that no prophet before me was granted: I was aided by terror cast into my enemies from a month’s journey away; the earth was made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification, so whenever any man is overtaken by the time for prayer, let him pray; the spoils of war were made lawful for me, though they had not been lawful for anyone before me; I was granted intercession; and whereas each prophet was sent exclusively to his own people, I was sent to all people.” Agreed upon.2

(1) The shaykh held that tayammum is valid with any substance found on the earth’s surface—including soil, whether dusty or not, sand, stone, or anything else—because it appears from the Prophet’s practice that he performed tayammum wherever the time for prayer overtook him. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 19. ٢- ثم يقول: ﴿بِسْمِ اللَّهِ﴾ ، ٣- ثم يضرب التراب بيديه مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً١، ٤- يَمْسَحُ بِهِمَا جَمِيعَ وَجْهِهِ، وَجَمِيعَ كَفَّيْهِ. ٤٥- فَإِنْ ضَرَبَ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَلَا بَأْسَ. قَالَ تَعَالَى: ﴿فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيداً طَيِّباً فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ مِنْهُ مَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيَجْعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ حَرَجٍ وَلَكِنْ يُرِيدُ لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ وَلِيُتِمَّ نِعْمَتَهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ﴾ [المائدة: ٦] . وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ: "أُعْطِيتُ خَمْسًا لَمْ يُعْطَهُنَّ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الأَنْبِيَاءِ قَبْلِي: نُصِرْتُ بِالرُّعْبِ مَسِيرَةَ شَهْرٍ، وَجُعِلَتْ لِيَ الأَرْضُ مَسْجِدًا وَطَهُورًا، فَأَيّمَا رَجُل أَدْرَكَتْهُ الصَّلاةَ فَلْيُصَلِّ، وأُحِلَّتْ لِيَ الغَنَائِمُ، وَلَمْ تَحِلَّ لأَحَدٍ قَبْلِي، وأُعْطِيتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ، وكَانَ النَّبِيُّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَى قَومِهِ خَاصَّةً، وَبُعِثْتُ إِلَى النَّاسِ عَامَّةً" متفق عليه٢.

١ صحح الشيخ: أن التيمم يكون بكل ما تصاعد على الأرض، من تراب له غبار أو لا غبار له، أو رمل، أو حجر، أو غير ذلك؛ لأن الظاهر من حال النبي ﷺ أنه تيمم في كل موضع أدركته فيه الصلاة. "المختارات الجلية، ص: ١٩". ٢ أخرجه البخاري "٤٣٥/١"، ومسلم "٥٢١".
