2—and a large amount of blood or the like 1,
3—and loss of consciousness through sleep or otherwise,
4—and eating camel meat2,
5—and touching a woman with desire,
6—and touching the private parts,
7—and washing the deceased3,
1. The Sheikh held the stronger view that blood, vomit, and similar substances do not invalidate ablution, whether the amount is small or large, because no clear evidence establishes that they do so, and the basic presumption is that ritual purity remains intact. *Al-Mukhtārāt*, p. 17.
2. *Al-Jazūr* means camels. The Sheikh said: “The correct view is that all parts of a camel—such as its rumen, heart, intestines, and the like—invalidate ablution, because they fall within the ruling and within the wording and meaning of the term. There is neither evidence nor rationale for distinguishing among its parts.” *Al-Mukhtārāt*, p. 17.
He also said that camels are uniquely distinguished from other livestock in three respects: first, eating their meat invalidates ablution; second, prayer is not valid in their pens, meaning the places where they remain and take shelter; and third, according to the correct view, they are the primary standard for blood money. *Al-Qawā'id wa-al-Furūq*, p. 168. Sheikh Abd Allāh ibn Aqīl said that a fourth may be added: aggravated blood money applies only when it is paid in camels.
3. The Sheikh said: “There is reason to question whether washing the deceased invalidates ablution, because the hadith concerning it has not been established as authentic. The reports that Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbās instructed those who washed the deceased to perform ablution need not be understood as making it obligatory. Nor do they override the established presumption that the washer’s ritual purity remains intact, since he has done nothing that invalidates it.” *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 17.
