Manhaj al-Salikin wa Tawdih al-Fiqh fi al-DinAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

Anas narrated, in a hadith traced back to the Prophet: “When one of you performs ablution and puts on his khuffs, let him wipe over them and pray in them, and, if he wishes, not remove them except when he enters a state of major ritual impurity.” Al-Hākim narrated it and declared it authentic.1

35—If any of the parts washed in his ablution has a splint over a fracture or medication over a wound, and washing it would harm him, he should wipe over it with water when purifying himself from either major or minor ritual impurity, until it heals.2

36—The manner of wiping over the khuffs is to wipe most of their upper surface.

37—As for a splint, he should wipe over its entire surface.

(1) Narrated by al-Hākim (1/181), who said, “It is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria”; also by al-Dāraqutnī (1/203) and al-Bayhaqī (1/289). See al-Zaylaī’s *Nasb al-Rāya* (1/179). *Subul al-Salām* (1/313) states: “The hadith establishes that ritual purity is a prerequisite. Although it leaves the duration unrestricted, it is qualified by the prescribed time limit, as indicated by the hadith of Safwān ibn Assāl and the hadith of Alī—may Allah be pleased with them both.” (2) The Shaykh explained that wiping over a splint does not require prior ritual purity, whether the wrapping covers only the area requiring it or extends beyond it. However, if one can reduce the extent of the wrapping, one must do so. *Al-Mukhtārāt*, p. 16.
