Chapter1 [Wiping over Khuffs (Foot Coverings) and a Splint]
34—If he is wearing a pair of khuffs or the like, he may wipe over them if he wishes2:
1—For one day and one night for a resident, and three days together with their nights for a traveler.
2—Provided that he puts them on3 in a state of ritual purity,
3—and that he wipes over them4 only in the event of minor ritual impurity.

(2) The Shaykh explained that if a *khuff* has a hole or tear through which the skin is visible, the correct view is that wiping over it is permissible, since it remains a *khuff* and therefore falls under the general purport of the texts. Moreover, the Companions’ *khuffs* were apparently not free of tears or splits. He also explained that, according to the correct view, the prescribed period begins with the first wiping, not when ritual impurity occurs; and that removing a *khuff* over which one has wiped, or anything similar, does not invalidate one’s ritual purity. Nor does ritual purity end upon expiry of the prescribed period, so long as it otherwise remains intact. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, pp. 15–17.

فَصْلٌ١ [فِي المَسْحِ عَلَى الخُفَّينِ والجَبِيرَةِ]
٣٤- فَإِنْ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ خُفَّانِ وَنَحْوُهُمَا مَسْحَ عَلَيْهِمَا إِنْ شَاءَ ٢:
١- يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً لِلْمُقِيمِ، وَثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ بِلَيَالِيهنَّ لِلْمُسَافِرِ.
٢- بِشَرْطِ أَنْ يَلْبَسَهُمَا ٣ عَلَى طَهَارَةٍ،
٣- وَلَا يمسحهما٤ إلا في الحدث الأصغر.

٢ بَيَّن الشيخ أنه إذا كان في الخف خرق أو فتق يصف البشرة، فالصحيح جواز المسح عليه؛ لأنه خف فيدخل في عموم النصوص، ولأن خفاف الصحابة الظاهر منها أنها لا تخلو من فتق أو شق، كما بيَّن أن ابتداء المدة على الصحيح من المسح لا من وقت الحدث، وأن الطهارة لا تنتقض بخلع الخف الممسوح ونحوه، كما لا تنتقض أيضًا بتمام المدة ما دامت الطهارة باقية.
