Manhaj al-Salikin wa Tawdih al-Fiqh fi al-DinAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

the affected place1; for the Lawgiver did not prescribe a specific number of washings for washing all2 impurities, except in the case of a dog’s impurity. For that, He prescribed seven washings, one of them with earth, as stated in the hadith agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim3.

27—Impure substances are:

1—Human urine.

2—Human feces.

3—Blood, although a small amount of blood is excused. The same applies to blood that flows from an animal whose meat is lawful to eat, as opposed to the blood remaining in its flesh and veins, which is pure.

4—Also among impurities are the urine and dung of every animal whose meat is forbidden to eat4.

1. The Shaykh held that when an impurity is removed by any means, whether with water or otherwise, the affected substance becomes pure. Likewise, if its foul properties disappear and are replaced by wholesome properties, it becomes pure. On this view, contaminated oils may be purified by treating them until the impurity they contain is eliminated. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 22. 2. Omitted from manuscript T. 3. Narrated by al-Bukhārī, 1/274, and Muslim, no. 279. 4. The Shaykh held that mules and donkeys are ritually pure while alive, like cats; hence their saliva, sweat, and hair are pure. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rode them frequently, yet he did not wash away anything from them that came into contact with him, nor did he instruct people to guard against it. Their meat, however, is foul. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 22.
