18—When squatting, he should rest his weight on his left leg and keep his right foot upright1.
19—He should conceal himself behind a wall or something similar.
20—If he is in an open area, he should go far away.
21—It is not permissible for him to relieve himself:
1—On a path.
2—In a place where people sit.
3—Beneath fruit-bearing trees.
4—Anywhere that would cause harm to people.
22—He must not face the qibla or turn his back to it while relieving himself2, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When you go to relieve yourselves, do not face the qibla while defecating or urinating, nor turn your backs to it; rather, face east or west.” Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim3.
1. A hadith concerning this was narrated by al-Bayhaqī in his *Sunan*, 1/96, with a weak chain, as Ibn Hajar noted in *Bulūgh al-Marām*, p. 21, and *al-Talkhīs*, 1/107. Al-Nawawī also deemed it weak in *al-Majmūʿ*, 2/92. Nevertheless, the practice is medically established. See Shaykh al-Bassām, *Tawdīh al-Ahkām ʿalā Bulūgh al-Marām*, 1/285.
2. Manuscripts B and T read: “his need.”
3. Narrated by al-Bukhārī, 1/498, and Muslim, no. 264. The Shaykh said: “The correct view is that it is not disliked to face the two luminaries—the sun and the moon—while relieving oneself, on the basis of this hadith.” *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 11.
