of silver when needed1, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do not drink from vessels of gold and silver, nor eat from dishes made of them2, for they are for them in this world and for you in the Hereafter.” Agreed upon3.

(1) The Shaykh states in *al-Qawāʿid wa-al-Furūq*, p. 155: “Among the sound distinctions is that the use of gold and silver falls into three categories. First, their use for vessels and similar items, which is unlawful for both males and females. Second, their use in clothing, which is permissible for women but not for men. Third, their use in military attire and implements of war, which is permissible even for males.” (2) In al-Nasā’ī’s narration, the wording is *sihāfihimā* (“platters made of the two metals”). A *sahfa* is a food vessel resembling a broad, shallow bowl. (3) Narrated by al-Bukhārī, 9/554, and Muslim, no. 2067.
