12—The basic rule concerning things is purity and permissibility.
13—If a Muslim doubts whether water, a garment, a place, or anything else is impure, it is deemed pure. Likewise, if he is certain that he was in a state of purity but doubts whether his ritual purity has been nullified, he remains in a state of purity1. This is based on the Prophet’s statement—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—(concerning a man who imagines that he has experienced something during prayer) 2: “He should not leave until he hears a sound or detects an odor.” Agreed upon3.
= and filthy substances. Thus, any water whose color, odor, or taste is altered by an impurity is impure and contaminating, regardless of whether the alteration is substantial or slight, occurs at the site being purified or elsewhere, affects the color, odor, or taste, and results from admixture or otherwise. If an impurity comes into contact with water without changing any of its characteristics, the water remains pure and purifying.” Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya, p. 7.
(1) The Shaykh stated that when pure garments are indistinguishable from impure ones, or prohibited garments from permissible ones, the correct view is that one should exercise one’s best judgment and perform a single prayer in a single garment. Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya, p. 10.
