The Prescribed Punishment for Theft
639—Whoever steals a quarter-dinar of gold, or property of equivalent value, from its secure place shall have his right hand amputated at the wrist, and the wound shall be cauterized1.
640—If he commits theft again, his left foot shall be amputated at the ankle, and the wound shall be cauterized.
(1) What is meant by *hasm* (sealing the wound) is immersing the amputation site—whether on the hand or foot, in cases of theft and the like—in boiling oil or fat, or cauterizing it with a heated iron so that the ends of the blood vessels close and the bleeding stops.
