Manhaj al-Salikin wa Tawdih al-Fiqh fi al-DinAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

of disobeying him1:

a. He admonishes her.

b. If she persists, he refrains from sharing her bed.

c. If she is not deterred, he strikes her, but not severely.

552—He is barred from taking these measures if he is withholding any right owed to her.

553—If discord between them is feared, the judge shall appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from hers, both knowledgeable about the circumstances and about reconciliation and separation. They shall reconcile the couple, if they deem it appropriate, with or without compensation, or separate them. Whatever they decide is binding upon both spouses. And Allah knows best.

(1) If a wife disobeys her husband, engages in *nushūz* (marital defiance), and neglects her duty to obey him despite no shortcoming on his part, her rights to marital rotation and maintenance are suspended until she resumes obedience. He should correct her conduct through admonition. See *Nūr al-Basā’ir*, p. 51.
