Prohibitions While in Ihrām

282—While1 in the state of ihrām2, a pilgrim must refrain from:

1—shaving the hair;

2—trimming the nails;

3—wearing tailored garments (if he is a man) 3;

4—covering his head, if he is a man;

5—using perfume4, whether male or female;

6—It is likewise forbidden for a pilgrim in ihrām to kill edible wild land game, direct anyone to it, or assist in killing it.

7—The gravest of the prohibitions while in ihrām is sexual intercourse, because it is strictly forbidden5, invalidates the pilgrimage rite, and necessitates the expiatory sacrifice of a camel.

1. MSS “B” and “T” read: “The pilgrim in ihrām must avoid all the prohibitions of ihrām, including:” 2. The shaykh held that anyone who commits a prohibition forgetfully owes no fidya, even if it involves removing hair or a nail—or even hunting game. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 65. 3. An addition found in MSS “B” and “T.” 4. MSS “B” and “T” read: “and perfume.” 5. MS “T” reads: “Its prohibition is especially stringent.”
