Manhaj al-Salikin wa Tawdih al-Fiqh fi al-DinAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

anyone whom you dislike. If they do so, then strike them, but not severely. They are entitled to provision and clothing from you in a reasonable manner. I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray thereafter: the Book of Allah. You will be asked about me, so what will you say?” They replied, “We testify that you have conveyed the message, discharged your duty, and given sincere counsel.” He then raised his index finger toward the sky and inclined it1 toward the people, saying, “O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness!”—three times.

35—Bilāl then gave the call to prayer, followed by the call to commence. He prayed the noon prayer, then the call to commence was given again and he prayed the afternoon prayer.

36—He prayed nothing between the two.

37—He then mounted and proceeded to the standing place.

38—He positioned his she-camel al-Qaswā with her belly toward the rocks2, placed the pedestrian path3 before him, and faced the qibla,

(1) In manuscript “ط,” as well as in Muslim, the reading is *yankutuhā*. The commentators explain that some transmissions read the word with tā, while others read it with bā, the latter being closer to the intended meaning. (2) These are rocks embedded in the ground behind Mount Arafat, to its east. A person standing there therefore faces both the mountain—Mount Ilāl, popularly known as Jabal al-Rahma (Mount Mercy)—and the qibla. (3) *Habl al-Mushāh*, spelled with hā, is the path taken by pedestrians. This path lies directly before anyone standing on the rocks.
