Manhaj al-Salikin wa Tawdih al-Fiqh fi al-DinAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

226—He also said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in hope of reward will have his previous sins forgiven; and whoever spends the Night of Decree in prayer out of faith and in hope of reward will have his previous sins forgiven.” Agreed upon1.

267—The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would observe devotional retreat during the last ten nights of Ramadan until Allah took him in death. His wives continued to observe devotional retreat after him. Agreed upon2.

268—He also said: “No journey should be undertaken except to three mosques: the Sacred Mosque, this mosque of mine, and al-Aqsā Mosque.” Agreed upon3.

1. Reported by al-Bukhārī (1/92, 4/115) and Muslim (no. 760). 2. Reported by al-Bukhārī (4/271) and Muslim (no. 1172). The Shaykh explained that the correct view is that it is not recommended for everyone who enters a mosque to intend *itikāf* (devotional retreat), since this practice is not established. See *al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 63. 3. Reported by al-Bukhārī (3/70) and Muslim (no. 827). A marginal note in copy “B” reads: “I do not know how this hadith relates to this book. It would be more appropriately placed in the following book, as scholars past and present have consistently done.” End quote. I say: The relevance of the hadith is clear. In the preceding hadith, the author—may Allah have mercy on him—cited evidence that *itikāf* is prescribed, and *itikāf* may be observed only in a mosque. This hadith therefore clarifies that it is impermissible to undertake a journey to observe *itikāf* in any mosque other than these three. Allah knows best.
