(1) Not found in “B” or “T.” (2) Reported by Abū Dāwūd, no. 1605; al-Tirmidhī, no. 643; al-Nasā’ī, 5/42; Ibn Hibbān, *Mawārid*, no. 498; and al-Hākim, 1/402, who said: “This hadith has a sound chain of transmission.” *Al-Talkhīs* states: “It was reported by Ahmad, the compilers of the three Sunan collections, Ibn Hibbān, and al-Hākim, on the authority of Ibn Abī Hathma. Its chain includes Abd al-Rahmān ibn Masūd ibn Dīnār, who narrated from Sahl. Al-Bazzār said: ‘He alone narrated it,’ while Ibn al-Qattān said: ‘His status is unknown.’ Al-Hākim said: ‘It has a corroborating report narrated by al-Bazzār through Ibn Lahīa.’ It also has a corroborating report, with a chain unanimously deemed sound, stating that Umar ibn al-Khattāb commanded this.” The hadith means that the zakat collectors dispatched by the ruler should, as circumstances warrant, leave one-third or one-quarter of the zakat due with the owners of the crops and fruit so that they may distribute it themselves among their relatives, neighbors, and others like them.
