BOOK OF FUNERAL RITES
192—The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Prompt those among you who are dying to say, ‘None is worthy of worship except Allah.’” Narrated by Muslim1.
193—He also said: “Recite Yā Sīn over those among you who are dying.” Narrated by al-Nasāʾī and Abū Dāwūd2.
(1) Recorded by Muslim (916). The shaykh explained that visiting the sick is among the most strongly emphasized deeds, especially when the patient is a relative or someone who has a general or particular claim upon one. The visitor should not prolong his stay or weary the patient with numerous questions, but should remain attentive to his condition. When death approaches, it is recommended to keep his throat moistened and prompt him to recite the *shahāda* (testimony of faith). After he dies, it is recommended to close his eyes, loosen his joints, and promptly prepare him for burial by washing, shrouding, carrying, and burying him. These latter duties are communal obligations. *Nūr al-Basāir*, p. 21.
(2) Recorded by Ahmad (5/27), Abū Dāwūd (3121), Ibn Mājah (1448), Ibn Hibbān (720), al-Hākim (1/565), Abū Dāwūd al-Tayālisī (931), and others, through Sulaymān al-Taymī, from Abū Uthmān. Al-Hāfiz states in *al-Talkhīs*, 2/110: “Ibn al-Qattān faulted it on account of inconsistency, its being narrated as *mawqūf* (stopping at a Companion), and the unknown status of Abū Uthmān and his father. Abū Bakr ibn al-Arabī reported that al-Dāraqutnī said: ‘This hadith has a weak chain of transmission and an unrecognized text; no hadith on this subject is authentic.’” See *al-Irwā*, no. 688.
