Chapter on the Two Eid Prayers1
178—The Prophet2 (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the people to go out for both prayers3, including adolescent girls4 and menstruating women, so that they might witness the good and the Muslims’ supplication. Menstruating women, however, were to remain apart from the prayer place. Narrated by al-Bukhārī and Muslim5.
179—Its time extends from when the sun has risen a spear’s length above the horizon until the zenith6.
180—The sunnah is:
1—to perform it out in the open,
(1) The shaykh held that the two Eid prayers are an individual obligation (*fard ayn*), because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed that adolescent girls and women who remained in their private quarters be brought out, while menstruating women were instructed to remain apart from the prayer place. Had its benefit not outweighed that of many obligatory duties, he would not have urged it so emphatically. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 52.
(2) Manuscript “A” reads: “and he commanded.”
(3) Manuscript “T” reads: “to it.”
(4) *Al-awātiq* is the plural of *ātiq*: a girl who has reached puberty or is approaching it.
(5) Recorded by al-Bukhārī, 1/466, and Muslim, no. 890.
(6) The shaykh explained that if the Eid prayer is missed, it may be made up the following day or thereafter, at its prescribed time. *Nūr al-Basā'ir*, p. 21.
