163—Among its conditions1 are:
- That it be performed within its prescribed time.2
- That it be held in a settled community.3
- That it be preceded by two sermons.
164—Jābir reported: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon, his eyes would redden, his voice would rise, and his anger would intensify, until he seemed like a scout warning of an approaching army, crying, “The enemy will be upon you in the morning! The enemy will be upon you in the evening!”
He would say, “To proceed: the best speech is the Book of Allah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, the worst matters are those newly introduced, and every innovation is misguidance.” Narrated by Muslim.4
= “Friday prayer is an obligatory duty upon every Muslim in congregation, except four…” is weak. The basic principle is that a slave is subject to the same ruling as a free person in all purely bodily acts of worship that have no connection to wealth. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 50.
(1) In “T”: “its conditions.”
(2) The shaykh stated that the time for Friday prayer begins when the sun has risen a spear’s length above the horizon and continues until the end of the time for Zuhr prayer. If that time expires, or if a latecomer joins the prayer with less than one rakʿah remaining, he must perform Zuhr instead. *Nūr al-Basā'ir*, p. 20.
(3) The shaykh affirmed that nothing authentic has been reported to support requiring forty attendees for Friday prayer or either of the two Eid prayers. *Al-Mukhtārāt al-Jaliyya*, p. 50.
