Chapter on the Mawāqīt

The period in which one may enter the state of ihram for Hajj begins with Shawwal, continues through Dhu’l-Qaʿdah, and includes the first ten nights of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah; there is also an opinion that permits it on the night preceding the Day of Sacrifice. If a person assumes ihram for Hajj outside that time, it is deemed an ʿumrah according to the sounder view. By contrast, the entire year is a valid time for entering ihram for ʿumrah.

As for the spatial miqat, someone residing in Mecca assumes ihram from Mecca itself—others say from anywhere within the Sacred Precinct—whereas anyone else must assume ihram at one of the designated mawāqīt
