Minhāj al-ṬālibīnAn-Nawawi

According to another view, the detached limb is unlawful.

The proper ritual dispatch (dhakāh) of any animal one can control is achieved by severing the entire ḥalqūm (windpipe), the passage of breath, and the mariʾ (esophagus), the passage of food. It is recommended also to cut the two wadajayn, the veins that lie on either side of the neck. If a person slaughters from the nape he has sinned, yet should he act quickly enough to cut both the windpipe and esophagus while stable life still remains, the meat is lawful; otherwise it is not. The same ruling applies to thrusting a knife through what is called the “fox’s ear.”

It is sunnah to pierce the camel at the hollow of its neck (nahr) and to slaughter cattle and sheep at the throat (dhabḥ); doing the reverse is nevertheless permissible. The camel should be standing with one fore-knee hobbled, while cattle and sheep are laid on their left flank, the right foreleg left loose and the remaining legs bound. One should sharpen the blade, face the animal toward the qiblah, say “In the name of Allah,” and send blessings upon the Prophet—Allah bless him and grant him peace—without adding, “and in the name of Muhammad.”

Section

It is lawful to slaughter an animal that is within one’s power, and to wound game that is not, with any cutting implement that has an edge: iron, copper, gold, wood, reed, stone, or glass—everything except a claw, a tooth, or any other bone. If the animal is killed with a blunt object, or by the sheer weight of something normally sharp—such as a pellet, a whip, or an arrow lacking a head or edge—or by a combination of arrow and pellet; or if it is struck by the point of an arrow while the flat of the shaft also impacts it and it dies from the two together; or if it is strangled in a snare; or if an arrow wounds it and it then crashes against the ground or a cliff and falls from there, the meat is unlawful. By contrast, if an arrow strikes it in mid-air and it drops to the ground and dies, the meat is lawful.

Hunting with trained beasts and birds of prey—such as a dog, cheetah, hawk, or falcon—is permissible provided they are trained: the beast must stop when rebuked, go when released, seize the quarry, and refrain from eating it; for birds of prey, the stronger view requires only that they not eat from the kill. These traits must be displayed repeatedly so that the animal is deemed properly disciplined. If an animal already judged trained then eats from its catch, that catch becomes, on the predominant view, unlawful and the animal must be trained anew. Licking the blood does not affect the ruling.

The dog’s bite upon the game is impure. The sounder opinion is that no concession is made for it: washing the spot with water and earth suffices, and the flesh need not be cut out and discarded. If the hunting creature kills its quarry merely by pressing on it with its weight, the meat is, according to the stronger view, lawful—even though the hunter had a knife in his hand.
